Famed Mexican cartel leader Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was sentenced Wednesday (July 17th) to end his days in jail by American justice.

Judge Brian Cogan of the Brooklyn Federal Court in New York, has imposed on " El Chapo ", 62, a life sentence with an additional 30 years, as provided by law.

The Mexican drug trafficker was convicted in February by a federal jury for smuggling cocaine, heroin and marijuana into the United States at the head of the Sinaloa cartel, one of Mexico's most violent criminal organizations. .

"El Chapo" Guzman twice escaped from high security prisons in Mexico, before being extradited to the United States in January 2017.

He has since been held in solitary confinement at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, a prison-fortress in Manhattan, conditions he compared Wednesday to " psychological torture " and " cruel and inhumane treatment ."
