According to a report published Monday, July 15 by the United Nations, world hunger affected 821.6 million people in 2018, against 811 the previous year. After decades of decline, this is the third consecutive year of rising undernourishment, also known as food insecurity.

After years of decline, undernourishment has been steadily increasing since 2015. Last year, it affected 821.6 million people, an annual report released on Monday by more UN organizations said. One in nine people suffer from hunger. In particular, conflict and global warming.

The prospect of a world without any undernourished people by 2030, which is one of the sustainable development goals set for this deadline, is a " huge challenge, " notes the report. "This goal will not be achieved by 2030 ", head of the World Food Program (WFP) David Beasley told a conference at UN headquarters.

" Without food security, we will never have peace and stability, " he warned, highlighting the interaction between these parameters. Wherever extremist groups have influence, hunger is used by them as a weapon to divide or recruit, warned David Beasley.

20% of the population concerned in Africa

The report, prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, with the assistance of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, UNICEF, WFP and WHO, notes that the subregion Food remains prevalent on many continents. In Africa, it affects nearly 20% of the population; in Asia, more than 11%; in Latin America and the Caribbean, less than 7%.

By adding food insecure people to these hungry people, the UN estimates that more than 2 billion people in the world, 8% of whom live in North America and Europe, do not regularly have food insecurity. access to healthy, nutritious food in sufficient quantity.

Paradoxically, the report finds that overweight and obesity continue to increase in all regions, especially among school-age children and adults. In 2018, about 40 million children under five were overweight. In 2016, 131 million children aged 5 to 9, 207 million adolescents and 2 billion adults were overweight, according to the report.
