To mark the end of the mourning for the families and loved ones of the missing, rallies are taking place, Saturday, July 13, in Sudan, in memory of the demonstrators killed during the violent dispersal of the sit-in installed in front of the headquarters of the army. Khartoum on June 3rd.

In the early afternoon, several hundred people gathered in several cities of the country such as Madani and Al-Obeid (center) and in Port Sudan, at the edge of the Red Sea.

End of mourning

Hundreds of people, chanting phrases such as "blood for blood, we do not want compensation" and carrying banners calling for "Justice for the martyrs", marched through the streets holding up photographs of killed protesters.

Meetings are also planned in Khartoum later in the day.

On June 3, 136 people were killed during the brutal evacuation of protesters by armed men, according to a committee of doctors close to the protest. The authorities mention 71 dead.

The crackdown on demonstrations, launched on December 19 after the Sudanese government decided to cut the price of bread, had already killed dozens of people. The movement then took a political turn, demanding the fall of President Omar al-Bashir, dismissed and arrested on 11 April by the army after three decades in power.

Agreement to come

In the coming days, an agreement between the generals in power since the fall of Bashir and the leaders of the protest must be signed, after several months of tension. This agreement must make it possible to initiate the transition to a civil government called for by the challenge.

The text, which is still under discussion between the two sides, was set up following intense negotiations between African Union and Ethiopian mediators.

This stipulates that the body responsible for conducting the transition for a period of approximately three years will be chaired by a military member for the first 21 months and then by a civilian representative for the remaining 18 months.

Saturday, a meeting between representatives of the protest and the military is scheduled in the evening to discuss the final terms of the agreement.
