The Spaniard Fernando Alonso, although McLaren's ambassador, would be free to run for another team in 2020 if he had the desire and the opportunity, says the boss of the British team, Zak Brown.

After the contract extension of his current pair of drivers (Spaniard Carlos Sainz Jr and Brit Lando Norris), "Fernando remains a McLaren ambassador," Brown told reporters on Friday.

"We have an excellent relationship and we are talking about programs for the future in other categories than F1," he said. "But we would be happy for him, if he wants to go back to F1, that he runs for another team because we do not have a free tub, and we would support him if that's what he wants."

Alonso drove in F1 between 2001 and 2018, winning the world title with Renault in 2005 and 2006. The Spaniard raced for McLaren in 2007, then between 2015 and 2018. The brand also entered the 500 Miles of Indianapolis in 2017 and 2019.
