Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Hakim said the region was not ready for a new war because the ongoing war on terrorism was not yet over.

"The best way to remove the current tension in the region is in the negotiations," Hakim told a joint news conference with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mugherini in Baghdad on Saturday.

He added that Iraq should not become a battlefield in the current crisis between the United States and Iran, but should play a role in resolving the crisis in addition to the efforts of a number of countries such as Kuwait and Oman.

For her part, Mujerini said that dialogue is the best way to resolve tension rather than escalation, which she said would lead to serious consequences for all. The European Union supported the idea of holding the regional conference called for by Iraq.

Mugherini's visit comes at a time when regional and international parties are trying to ease the tense atmosphere in the Gulf region amid tension between Iran on the one hand and the United States and its allies on the other.

Finally, Iraqi President Barham Salih said he did not want Iraq to be a platform for striking another country.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera broadcast a few days ago, Iraqi national security adviser and head of the popular crowd Saleh al-Fayadh said that the current crisis in the Gulf threatens international peace and stability, and that the outbreak of military operations will cause a disaster in the region and warned of the repercussions on the security situation in Iraq.
