The ruling transitional military junta in Sudan has foiled a failed coup attempt by a number of officers of various ranks, aiming to overthrow the current military junta and disrupt the agreement with the forces of the Declaration of Freedom and Change, according to the council statement.

The head of the security committee in the Transitional Military Council, the first corner Jamal Omar Ibrahim, said that the security services thwarted a coup attempt involving a group of officers and noncommissioned officers in the service and pension in the armed forces and the security apparatus.

Ibrahim added that the failed coup attempt aimed to disrupt the agreement between the military junta and the forces of freedom and change, which is imminent, which will lead to a political transformation that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people, he said.

According to the participants in the trial, 12 officers, including 7 in service and 5 in pensions, were arrested and 4 non-commissioned officers were detained.

Ibrahim said that others, including the leader of the failed coup attempt, were being arrested and confirmed that the bodies concerned had begun an investigation and would be brought to a fair trial.

With regard to the timing of the coup attempt, Ibrahim said he planned to implement it in a timely manner to preempt the agreement between the military junta and the forces of freedom and change.

He stressed that the armed forces, rapid support forces, security, intelligence and police will remain keen on the security and stability of the country and secure the gains and achieve the highest national goals, and that access to power through the ballot boxes.

Previous attempts
Earlier this month, Sudan's military junta said it had foiled more than a planned coup against the council.

"There are two different groups currently in custody, one of them is composed of five members, and the other has more than 12 people," spokesman Shams al-Din Kabbashi told a news conference.
