The protest continues in Malawi after the May 21 presidential election. Thousands of people took to the streets Thursday and Friday, June 5 to denounce the re-election, fraudulent, according to them, the head of state Peter Mutharika. The latter has already condemned these demonstrations.

On May 21, outgoing President Peter Mutharika was reelected with a small lead - 160,000 votes - only three points higher than the candidate of the main opposition party, Lazarus Chakwera.

The opposition immediately shouted at the fraud and denounced irregularities, with a " high number of non-compliant registration sheets " and " erasures on the newsletters and minutes ".

For its part, the EU observation mission also claims to have noted a large number of errors in counting votes. Justice is finally seized.

The Electoral Commission is currently examining the case and is expected to deliver its verdict soon, more than a month after the results of the presidential election.

While awaiting a decision, demonstrations, sometimes violent, shake the largest cities of the country. Thousands of people marched Friday for the second day in a row. This Saturday, June 6, Independence Day, the capital of the country, Lilongwe, remained calm but some protesters promised to return to the streets on Monday.

Malawian President Peter Mutharika has already condemned the protests and accused the organizers of plotting to overthrow his government.

" To make Malawi a lawless society is unacceptable. We will hold each of them responsible, the force will respond to the force and this nonsense will end, "he said at a meeting on Saturday, on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of independence.
