The Israeli Foreign Ministry summoned Chilean ambassador to Tel Aviv for a reprimand hearing due to the visit of Chilean President Sebastian Pinera and his wife to the Al-Aqsa Mosque with Palestinian officials.

An Israeli Foreign Ministry statement called on the ambassador and Chilean embassy officials to accompany Palestinian officials to the Chilean president during his tour of the mosque to al-Aqsa, contrary to what was agreed upon in the program.

The statement said that Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz considered very seriously any attempt at what the statement called a violation of Israeli sovereignty over the Temple Mount and the violation of prior understandings on it, the statement said.

On Monday, the Chilean president began a tour of Israel and the Palestinian territories. On Tuesday he toured the compound of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, accompanied by Palestinian officials, including Palestinian Authority Affairs Minister Fadi al-Hadmi.

"The freedom of worship that Israel observes more than any other person must be separated from the protection of our sovereignty over the Temple Mount," the Israeli foreign minister said in a tweet on Twitter on Wednesday.

Foreign dignitaries visit the site in coordination with Israeli officials.

According to an official source in the Chilean delegation, the visit was "special" and "officially participated by the delegation of Chile only."

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin received Wednesday Pinera to be received later by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

He will also meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on Thursday before heading to Japan.

Chile has the largest Palestinian community in the world.
