Opposition presidential candidates have accused police of making a series of arrests among their activists before sacking the seats of Biram Dah Abeid and Kane Hamidou Baba.

In the early evening of Monday, June 24, clashes erupted between opposition party activists and anti-riot police units in several neighborhoods in Nouakchott.

The four opposition candidates accused police of making a series of arrests among their militants before sacking the sieges of Biram dah Abeid and Kane Hamidou Baba. Joined by RFI, Biram dah Abeid denounces the facts.

We denounce the attacks on the sieges of Kane Hamidou Baba and Biram dah Abeid. We also denounce the fact that there were massive unjust and unjustified arrests. We denounce that there are many wounded and that those arrested are in a situation of torture.

Opposition postponed protest march

In the wake of the victory of the candidate of power, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, in the first round of the presidential election, the four opposition candidates still stand together to contest the results. After a short night, first spent at the Ministry of the Interior where they had been summoned, and then at a joint press conference, the four opposition candidates met around 2.30 pm at Biram Dah Abeid HQ. They talked for almost two hours to finally decide to postpone the protest march .

They mentioned a first politically correct reason to know the entry match of the Mourabitounes for their first selection at the African Cup of Nations that was to mobilize youth. But, more in hollow, it is the lack of real organization of this march which seems to be one of the reasons for this postponement.

Take the time to mobilize

By allowing themselves two or three days to mobilize at the national level, they hope to be able to demonstrate legally. Because it's also where things were unclear on Monday. According to the Ministry of the Interior, no request for permission to demonstrate was filed with the authorities.

In the Biram camp, it is recognized that the cancellation was late when about two hundred young people were waiting by his headquarters to walk to the Ceni. On Sunday, many arrests were made, and opposition leaders announced that they wanted to negotiate their release with the authorities.
