Abdel Fattah al-Sissi canceled in extremis his participation in the inauguration ceremony of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to receive Saturday in Cairo General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan. The two men discussed recent developments in Sudan, including attempts at mediation between the Military Council and the Alliance for Freedom and Change.

Both sides have suspended negotiations on the composition and leadership of the Sovereign Transitional Council, the body that will lead the country until the next elections. Faced with the deadlock, the Alliance for Freedom and Change announced a general strike on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Egyptian president assured General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan of Egypt's support " for the efforts to guarantee the stability of the Sudanese state and to realize the aspirations of its people ".

According to well-informed sources, President al-Sisi also expressed the wish to keep Islamist movements out of the sphere of power in Sudan. The nightmare of Egyptian power is that Sudan is falling into a chaos that allows Islamists to take power. A position shared by Saudi Arabia that helps Sudan economically.
