The Emperor of Japan Naruhito of the Imperial Palace, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs Khalid bin Mohammed Al-Attiyah and the "Sunrise" Medal on Thursday morning.

The Emperor of Japan gave the gift of the Rising Sun Medal in recognition of his efforts to strengthen the friendly relations and cooperation between the State of Qatar and Japan and his appreciation for his role in sponsoring and success of the projects of the Qatari Friendship Fund in Japan for the reconstruction of areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

The ceremony was attended by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and a number of Japanese ministers and senior officials.

The Medal was established on April 10, 1875 by decree of the Japanese State Council, and its emblem represents rays emitted by the bright sun symbolizing Japan.

The medal is awarded to those who have made outstanding achievements in international relations, the dissemination of Japanese culture, contributions that have contributed to the advancement of their fields, and developments in social and professional welfare or in the field of environmental protection.
