The huge fire, whose causes were not yet known, broke out shortly before 7 pm in the historic Parisian cathedral. The fire led to the collapse of the Gothic cathedral tower, which was built between the 12th and 14th centuries and is 93 meters high.

About 400 firefighters took part in the fight against the fire and attempted to rescue the two front towers, which they were able to accomplish before midnight.

Firefighters said the fire was "probably linked" to the cathedral's restoration workshop, which broke out a few days before Catholic Christians celebrated Easter.

Leaders of states, governments and political figures sent letters of solidarity with the French from the cathedral fire.
