State of emergency declared: Meanwhile, 310 dead after attacks in Sri Lanka

Colombo (dpa) - Two days after the series of suicide attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka, the death toll has increased to 310. The police said on Tuesday on request.

More than 500 injured were treated in hospitals. There have now been around 35 arrests. More than 20 houses were searched, it was said.

Emergency regulations came into force on the night of Tuesday. President Maithripala Sirisena declared the public emergency in the interests of public safety, public order and security of supply of goods and services to citizens, as stated in a statement by the President. The regulations provide security forces with extended powers, such as for searches and detention of persons.

Today was also declared a national day of mourning. In the morning, three minutes of silence were held. Numerous burials were planned.
