After Cali was found, the emergency services took him to the nearest hospital on Staten Island, where he was declared dead. The murderer escaped, according to witnesses, in a blue pick-up truck.

Cali's wife and children were home, local media report. The 53-year-old mafioso was known as "Franky Boy" and lived a relatively reclusive life. In 2015 he came to the top of the Gambino's.

The police are investigating whether Cali was killed on behalf of rival Mafia, or whether the perpetrator had a personal motive. No arrests have yet been made.

The power of the Gambino clan

New York has five Mafia clans. The Gambino's are connected to the Inzereillo clan in Sicily. The Gambino family was once the largest and most influential organized crime group in the United States.

The family was previously led by the famous crime chief John J. Gotti. He took control of the clan by organizing the murder of his predecessor, Paul Castellano, in 1985 for a restaurant in Manhattan.

The power of the Gabino family decreased in the 1990s, when several leaders were convicted of murder and extortion.
