The French Foreign Minister said Thursday that the results of the presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo announced Wednesday were "not in line" expectations and the opponent Martin Fayulu was "a priori" the winner.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the opposition candidate Felix Tshisekedi was declared, this Thursday night, winner of the election of December 30 with 38.57% of the votes to the other head of the divided opposition, Martin Fayulu (34.8%). " It seems that the results proclaimed are not consistent with the results that we have seen here or there, " said for his part the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian on the French news channel CNEWS . " The Episcopal Conference of the Congo did some checks, announced results that were totally different, " he added.

The powerful Congolese Episcopal Conference (Cenco), which had deployed a mission to observe the poll, declared January 4 to know the name of the winner, without naming it.

" We must keep calm, avoid clashes and clarity about these results that are the reverse of what we imagined, what was advanced, " continued Jean-Yves Le Drian . " It can go wrong because Mr. Fayulu was a priori the outgoing leader of these elections, " he added.

Anger of the Congolese government

Words that Lambert Mende, spokesman for the Congolese government and the Common Front for the Congo (power), have not tasted. " Whatever may come out of the deliberations of the Constitutional Court that one or the other will be able to seize, I totally disapprove the fact that a foreign dignitary allowing such words, as regards the Congolese actions, has he told RFI . This is a typical case of interference that we formally reject at the level of the Common Front for Congo, even if it could have been done in our favor. We do not accept external interference . We have not made a sacrifice to finance these elections alone in order to avoid such interference to support them. "
