Less than a week after a failed military coup, the president of Gabon, Ali Bongo, has appointed a new prime minister. The coup attempt took place while the president was being treated abroad due to a stroke.
Bongo, who has been in Morocco since October, appointed Julien Nkoghe Bekale as prime minister by decree. Bekale is the former Minister of Labor.
Soldiers occupied the headquarters of the state broadcaster for some time on Monday and announced that they wanted to "save a democracy in danger".
The police intervened and captured seven coup plotters. Two others were killed.
