“In schools, the decline in the use of the Russian language is from 50% in the first grade to 20% in the ninth. And this is not the last reform. The government does not hide the fact that it’s in its plans to completely squeeze out Russian from both state and private schools, after 10–15 years repeating what was done at the universities, ”he said.

Mitrofanov noted that the Russian Union of Latvia calls for a human approach to be applied to the Russian-speaking minority and the language remained a means of learning.

“Of course, there is one state language, but at the same time there is a wide European practice, when languages ​​of national minorities are also included in the education system,” he stressed.

Earlier, the Latvian Constitutional Court recognized the decision to translate the schools of national minorities, including Russian, into the Latvian language of instruction, in line with the Constitution.

LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky commented on a decision with the Constitutional Court of Latvia on the situation with Russian schools in an interview with the ANF.
