Teacher Daisy Mertens from primary school De Vuurvogel in Helmond won the title of best teacher in the world on Sunday. The honor went to Kenyan teacher Peter Tabichi. The Varkey Foundation, the organizer of the Global Teacher Prize, announced this on Sunday.

In February, Mertens entered the top ten best teachers and with that achieved a place in the finals of the best teacher in the world.

Mertens and the nine other finalists were selected from more than ten thousand submissions from 179 countries. The Dutch candidate won the prize for the best primary school teacher in the Netherlands in 2016.

The jury members were impressed by the school where Mertens works. "The school has 440 children with thirty different nationalities. In addition, she also teaches children with learning difficulties and gifted children."

According to the organization, Mertens had deliberately chosen this school in a poor neighborhood of Helmond. "She encourages children to plan for themselves what they are going to learn. That way the students get more out of themselves."
