At least 25 people were killed and 40 injured in a series of explosions at six churches and hotels in Sri Lanka today (Sunday).

According to local media and foreign news sources, explosions occurred almost simultaneously in one of the Catholic cathedrals in Colombo, capital of Sri Lanka today, and in three major hotels with foreign visitors.

A similar eruption occurred in two churches, including Catholic cathedrals in other parts of the world, such as Negombo and Batticaloa.

Local media quoted hospital officials as saying at least 42 people were killed and 280 injured.

The number of casualties is expected to increase if specific damage is confirmed.

A spokesman for the Rwandunegaekera Police Agency said the Easter Sunday was in progress at the church where the explosion occurred.

Another official said two of the churches were suspected of suicide bombings.

The cause of the explosion and the materials used have not yet been identified.
