The writer, actress and fashion icon, Caroline Lee Radziwill , younger sister of the former first lady of the USA, Jacqueline Kennedy, died Friday at her home in New York at the age of 85.
Friend of many celebrities, among them the painter Andy Warhol , the dancer Rudolph Nureyev or the writer Trumman Capote , Caroline Lee Bouvier (1933), also an interior designer - work that had the hallmark of its elegance and sophistication - married three times and had among his husbands the Polish prince Stanislaw Albrecht Radziwill, with whom he had two sons, Anthony and Anna Christina.
The death of one of them, Anthony at age 40 , on August 10, 1999, hit the icon of fashion hard. Several weeks before his death, for a testicular cancer he battled for a decade, he had been the godfather of his cousin John John Kennedy's wedding.
Kennedy, lawyer and then director of George magazine, would give a speech to honor his cousin at his funeral but the tragedy touched the family again when he lost his life with his wife Carolyn Bessette and her sister-in-law in a plane crash. which are celebrating their twentieth anniversary this year.
He also had a close relationship with great designers such as Yves Saint Laurent or Oleg Cassini and his beauty was captured by many artists and photographers, including Peter Board, with whom he also had a romantic relationship.
In 1953 Radziwill married first that his sister, with the publisher Michael Temple Canfield , whom he divorced in 1959. His second marriage was with the Polish prince.
The magazine Vanity Fair highlights this Saturday that was also known as one of the swans of Capote and adds that this was referring to the group of New York high society women who gathered around the writer to talk about their dream lives, and between they also figured fashion designer Gloria Vanderbilt .
It also echoes what has been highlighted by other media, the Radziwill rivalry and its older sister Jacqueline , who cite an unauthorized biography published this autumn, The Fabulous Bouvier Sisters: The Tragic and Glamorous Lives of Jackie and Lee , by Sam Kushner and Nancy Schoenberger.
According to VanityFair , although Radziwill was "a star in itself, whose brightness not only dazzled Manhattan salons but also in the halls of the international elite," she could never eclipse her sister .
That rivalry existed from childhood because her older sister was the favorite of his father, the banker John Vernou Bouvier III, and she of his mother, socialite Janet Norton Lee , a marriage that ended in divorce.
"He was always in favor of her, it was something that was very clear to me (...) Then I understood him because he had reasons for it, he looked like him physically and that made my father feel very proud," he admitted publicly.
However, when Jacqueline Kennedy became first lady, they were inseparable , her younger sister accompanied him on trips and was a great support when they assassinated the president, on November 22, 1963.
But, the discrepancies resurfaced because both fell in love with the same man , the Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis, who ended up marrying Jacqueline.
Radziwill showed that he did what he wanted. The same day she would marry hotel magnate Newton Cope, she left him there, but she did not want to miss the honeymoon trip they had planned and they went to the Caribbean together.
In 1988 he remarried to the set designer Herbert Ross , marriage that ended in divorce.
Caroline Lee Bouvier, who published two photo books about her travels and famous friends, continued working and was the public relations and special events coordinator for Giorgio Armani .
