Madrid (dpa) - Today, the eagerly awaited trial of twelve Catalan separatist leaders begins in Madrid's Supreme Court. The prosecution accuses politicians and activists in the wake of the independence referendum on 1 October 2017 rebellion, riot and misappropriation of public funds. In total, nearly 600 witnesses will be interrogated, such as the conservative ex-Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. Former Regional President Carles Puigdemont, who has exiled himself in Belgium, is not affected by the process.
