Mayor John Jorritsma of Eindhoven has banned sixteen people from officially entering Sinterklaas in 2019 and 2020. The people were involved in disturbances during the entry of 2018 into the city.

The prohibition applies to an area around the route of the entry. The sixteen people must also report to the police station in Eindhoven during the entry.

During the Sinterklaas event, counter-protesters on Catherina Square sought confrontation with protesters from Kick Out Zwarte Piet (KOZP). The group called offensive slogans and threw cans of beer and eggs at the demonstrators. A police officer was also kicked.

The police have arrested several suspects for public violence.

Mayor: "Threat and insult protesters unacceptable"

Mayor John Jorritsma presents the measures to make it clear that this should not happen again. "The behavior of this group has made a demonstration more difficult. I have made good agreements with Kick Out Zwarte Piet about the place, time and nature of demonstration, which the demonstrators have also adhered to."

"That they are subsequently threatened, insulted and attacked is unacceptable. I am right for the fundamental right to demonstrate. The rioters' treatment of the protesters was unworthy of Eindhoven."
