At the Saint-Sulpice church, the fire that ravaged Notre-Dame de Paris has raised concerns about the state of electrical systems. The employees are very keen on the audit planned by the Ministry of Culture.

Is the drama of Notre-Dame a more general warning on the state of French monuments? Franck Riester, the Minister of Culture, wants to take the lead by engaging "a general inventory of places to see if the safety devices are adequate and sufficient in other French heritage buildings." The Saint-Sulpice church in Paris will be in the spotlight in the coming days, since it is here that the festivities of Holy Week take place, such as Sunday Mass.

"It's cluttered with wires, switches, lights ..."

The building, which saw Fénelon and Bossuet, was built more than 300 years ago. So sometimes, her protectors are afraid to see her, too, go up in smoke. "We always keep an eye on the candles, but often what sets the fire is the electric wires that are under the floors, in the frames, in the walls, and we do not see them. no, it's cluttered with wires, switches, lights, antediluvian bulbs ... ", worries Clément Savary, young volunteer guide of the churches of Paris, at the microphone of Europe 1.

"We do not have smoke detectors"

In Saint-Sulpice, however, the fire safety device is up to standard. Christophe Saleron, the stage manager, confirms that he is even checked every year. But he recognizes that in these old buildings, the inventory of fixtures desired by the Ministry of Culture is not superfluous. "An audit is always welcome, our structure, for example, can burn, because we do not have smoke detectors or a standard electrical line, but there is still room for improvement in terms of maintenance." he observes. "But when you talk about a church, these are huge budgets."
