Greta Thunberg has held at the Golden Camera a flaming appeal for the rescue of the world's climate. "We are now at a crossroads in our history," said the 16-year-old activist on Saturday night in Berlin. She called on celebrities to raise their voices as they impact billions of people worldwide.

Thunberg, which has become a symbol of a wave of protests - because it always demonstrates on Friday for a more courageous fight against climate change, instead of going to school - was awarded a special prize for climate protection.

"The student from Sweden has us upset," said laudator Michael "Bully" Herbig at the gala in the disused Tempelhof Airport. Thunberg is a "real phenomenon". With hate and malice they will not stop her. There were standing ovations for Thunberg from the spectators in the hall. She dedicated the prize to those who protected the Hambach Forest and left the fossil energy in the ground.

Around 1200 guests were invited to the film and television awards. Steven Gätjen moderated the evening. The ZDF broadcast the award ceremony organized by the Spark Media Group. At the opening, the boy band Westlife sang. The audience included actor Jan Josef Liefers, presenter Kai Pflaume and US actress Jessica Chastain.

On the pink carpet also appeared the Austrian artist Tom Neuwirth, previously known as Conchita Wurst. Most recently, he showed himself in pictures rather masculine and called himself "sausage". In Berlin he appeared with thick metal chain and black corsage.

Golden Camera 2019: "Next time I'm really playing something funny, dad."

The awarding of several prizes was decided by a jury, which included the actors Nadja Uhl and Richy Müller ("Tatort"). The actress Anna Schudt was honored, for example. The 45-year-old got a Golden Camera as the best actress for her role in the ZDF film "Departure for Freedom". The family drama about the situation of women in the seventies was also awarded as the best TV movie. "I'm so proud of this movie," said Schudt. And added, "Next time I'm really playing something funny, daddy."

It was already known that British actress Vanessa Redgrave should be honored for her life's work. She could not come herself. "She had an accident last week, and although she feels better every day, the doctors have given her a strict travel ban," the organizers said.
