Gateway to Hell: At the Auschwitz concentration camp, the Nazis murdered at least 1.1 million people. The liberation by the Red Army on January 27, 1945 is therefore commemorated since 2005 as International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust. For many Auschwitz prisoners, however, the suffering was not over: the SS had driven tens of thousands on death marches west just before they were liberated.
