In 1916, Marabou was founded in Sundbyberg and has given its name to Marabouparken, which also houses the municipality's art gallery.

The Marabou heritage has been a source of pride for Sundbyberg, even though production moved to Upplands Väsby in 1976. But now the brand's name has been tarnished because the parent company Mondelēz has business in Russia.

Now Sundbyberg's opposition councillor Johan Storåkers (L) wants the park and art gallery to change its name.

"It is about sending a signal that we really stand behind the Ukrainian people with total solidarity, and then we must condemn a company that does business in Russia, and they also own the Marabou brand. It is important that through our actions make our position clear, in such a vulnerable situation in Europe and the world, says Johan Storåkers to SVT Kulturnyheterna.

Is this also the view of the party?

"It's not handled in the party. However, this afternoon we have had a preparation within our municipal council group and will submit a motion during tonight's municipal council in Sundbyberg with the same message, says Johan Storåkers.

Name suggestion: Sundbybergparken

What the park should instead be called needs to be discussed further in Sundbyberg, according to Johan Storåkers, but at the same time comes up with a proposal:

"For example, it could be called Sundbybergsoarken, but that's just a suggestion, let the conversation go on," he says.

Peter Schilling (S) is the chairman of the municipal executive board and says that the municipality has terminated various agreements with Marabou and Mondelez, but that a name change is not something that should be voted through in the municipality, but that it is up to the Sundbybergers.

"Marabouparken is very important to many Sundbybergers, for example, many in my party have worked there. I think you should be a little careful and even if you changed the name, I think it would still be called Marabouparken in the vernacular," he says.
