One of the perpetrators died when Bunduquin's son hit them with his car as they fled the crime scene. The Philippines is one of the most dangerous countries on earth for journalists. Many are murdered and the perpetrators often get away. Cresenciano Bunduquin had a program on a local radio station and also broadcast on Facebook.

"Had been threatened"

The head of the radio station, Jester Joaquin, told AFP that Cresenciano Bunduquin was reviewing local issues. More recently, he had critically examined an oil spill, illegal gambling and politics, among other things.

"He told me he had been threatened but didn't give me any details," Joaquin said.

"Likely with more attacks"

Bunduquin is the third journalist killed since President Ferdinand Marcos took power almost a year ago. Jonathan de Santo, president of the Philippine Association of Journalists, said the murder of Cresenciano Bunduquin showed that the country's journalists often work under threat, despite the fact that relations between the media and those in power have improved somewhat.

"When those who carry out attacks on the media are not held accountable and the victims do not receive justice, more attacks are likely in the future," said Jonathan de Santo.
