And every day greets the election

Scene in Istanbul, a few days before the run-off election: On 28 May, voters in Turkey are called upon to cast their ballots again. The presidential elections were a real neck-and-neck race – in the end, it was not enough for Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to be re-elected, but he was not even half a percent short of an absolute majority. Erdoğan is now running again against challenger Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who won 44.88 percent of the vote. Meanwhile, the ultra-nationalist politician Sinan Oğan, who came third in the election, called for Erdoğan's election.

Have a good flight

The approval process dragged on for years, but now it's here: In Wernigerode, the first witches' traffic light in Saxony-Anhalt has been put into operation. The traffic light shows a witch on a flying broom in the green phase and a devil figure in the red phase. The idea came from a group of visitors who annually celebrate the Walpurgis Festival in Wernigerode.

Razing to the ground

On Monday, a worker carries away corrugated iron, behind him the work is in full swing. On the French island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, one of the largest slums is destroyed. According to France's Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, the aim is to eliminate slums, eliminate undignified living conditions and create alternative accommodation. He also wants to expel people without the right to stay. The island geographically belongs to the archipelago of the Comoros and had voted to remain with France in 1974.

Flag march

It is May 18, on the border with Israel east of Gaza. A man holds two crossed Palestinian flags in the air, behind which black smoke rises from burning tires. The demonstration is a reaction to Jerusalem Day, which takes place at the same time – in which nationalists celebrate the conquest of the city with a flag march and also march through Muslim areas. What patriotism is for some, is provocation for others.
