On the ninth day of the Cannes Film Festival, two films enter the race for the Palme d'Or on Wednesday, May 24: The Abduction of Italian Marco Bellochio, and Asteroid City by American Wes Anderson. This one is known for its five-star castings and offbeat humor. On Tuesday, May 23, the team arrived by bus at the Palais des Festivals in a supercharged atmosphere.

Leaving aside the cast, which includes Tom Hanks, Steve Carell, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tilda Swinton and other stars, Asteroid City is a kind of summer camp in the middle of the Arizona desert. It was there that in the 1950s a group of astronauts in shorts found themselves cornered by the FBI, on the grounds that a flying saucer had been spotted nearby.

While this may seem light as a starting point for a film, the synopsis allows Wes Anderson to give free rein to his visual sketch genius. It offers a sparkling comedy with a gallery of actors who play wacky characters, including Jeff Goldblum as an alien.

This Wednesday evening, change of program with a climb of the steps more sober, but just as glamorous: Juliette BInoche and Benoît Magimel arrive for The Passion of Dodin Bouffant, a story that combines love and gastronomy.
