In the grasslands of Inner Mongolia in mid-May, the pasture has turned green. In the Taifu Temple Banner of the Xilin Gol League in Inner Mongolia, Zhang Chunming, who has been teaching for 5 years, is as busy as ever, and her time is crammed with teaching and research activities three times a week.

Located in the southernmost part of the Xilin Gol grassland in Inner Mongolia, the Taifusi Banner was listed as a national key poverty alleviation and development flag in 1994 and withdrew from the national poverty banner county sequence in 2020. There are 8 primary schools in Taifusi Banner, with about 4700,40 students and more than <> English teachers.

Zhang Chunming, a post-70s generation, is an English teacher at Shahe Central Primary School in Beijing's Changping District. In September 2019, she was already a backbone teacher at the municipal level in Beijing and chose to teach at the Taifu Temple Banner.

Unlike other volunteer teachers, her main student group consists not only of local elementary school students, but also their English teachers. "I want to be a kindling person. Teachers and children are the sparks of this steppe. ”

From the first month of volunteer teaching, Zhang Chunming insisted on writing a volunteer teaching diary every day. A new document is created every day, a new folder is created every semester, and 60,4 words of volunteer teaching log have been completed so far. The simple text records how she has led the growth of local primary school English teachers step by step as a volunteer teacher in the past four years.

In the past four years, Zhang Chunming has traveled to four local schools to set off a teaching reform among primary school English teachers through demonstration lessons, lectures, group lesson preparation, listening and evaluation. From learning the concept of new course standards to in-depth study of teaching materials, from overall unit preparation to teaching design writing, from theoretical training to practical operation, from classroom teaching to courseware production... Step by step, more and more teachers join in.

"In fact, compared with Beijing, it is indeed a bit closed, and teachers do not have as many opportunities to listen to expert training lectures and channels to learn the latest information and master learning resources like Beijing." Zhang Chunming's initial idea was simple, that is, to share the teaching methods and learning channels he had explored over the years with local teachers. "When teachers master good teaching methods, children will learn easily and happily. It is the children who ultimately benefit. ”

"It's hard for children to get out of the county, how can they see the outside world?" Zhang Chunming told reporters that she bought three sets of picture books at her own expense and interspersed the content of the picture books in the classroom. At the same time, she also helps teachers supplement more teaching resources such as video, audio and picture books in English classes. "Make English teaching into English education, so that children love learning."

Historically, English classes at Taifusi Banner Primary School started in the third grade. In order to nurture the children's interest, in the 2020-2021 school year, she spent an entire year writing a school-based curriculum for singing and learning English for second-graders. "We also made the songs into musicals and organized presentation performances at the end of the semester, which the children loved so much."

"Give the class back to the students, and they'll be more engaged." Zhang Chunming told reporters that teachers' teaching methods have changed, and students' enthusiasm will also change. "The difference between being forced to learn and taking the initiative to learn is too great."

Over the years, the teachers' enthusiasm for learning has also touched Zhang Chunming, most of the teachers have to attend classes on weekdays, and everyone uses the time before going to work in the morning, after work in the evening and on weekends to prepare lessons with Zhang Chunming.

"Feel happy." Bai Yujie, an English teacher at the Third Primary School of Taifusi Qi, told reporters that over the years, she has made a lot of progress in teaching concepts and curriculum implementation, as well as in the production and use of multimedia teaching aids. In October 2022, Zhang Chunming set up an English workshop in Taifusi Banner, with 10 local English teachers. Here, she conducts a large-scale English teaching and research activity once a month, in the form of special lectures and on-site research classes.

During the interview, Zhang Chunming often lamented that it was precisely because of the encouragement and support of the local education bureau and primary school principals that she could persevere.

Due to his outstanding performance, Zhang Chunming has successively won the titles of "Beijing-Mongolia Helping and Cooperative Education Poverty Alleviation Counterpart Teaching Outstanding Teaching Teacher", "Beijing-Mongolia Helping and Cooperative Education Outstanding Contribution Individual" and "Excellent Teaching Supporting Teacher".

In July this year, Zhang Chunming will end his four-year volunteer teaching life and return to Beijing. In the coming months, she plans to compile a 7,4-word volunteer journal while continuing to prepare for lessons.
