A traffic accident sparked great controversy among social media users, as a wedding procession turned into a tragedy due to a terrifying traffic accident that killed one person and injured 13 others with various fractures and injuries.
As for the details of the incident, local media said that a wedding procession that includes a number of cars was crossing last Sunday evening the tunnel of the ninth region in Aqaba governorate, and it stopped completely inside the tunnel.
The tunnel was not reserved for the convoy cars only, it happened to be a large truck heading towards it, and the surveillance camera documented the moment the truck driver was surprised by the convoy cars parked in front of him, so he did not find an opportunity to avoid them or to stop the vehicle, so he hit about 7 cars, in a frightening and horrific scene.
As for the culprit in the accident, the Public Security Directorate said – as quoted by the Jordanian newspaper Al-Dustour – that the reason is the complete parking inside the tunnel for small vehicles (wedding procession) coinciding with not taking the necessary precautions while driving for the cargo vehicle.
Shabakat (2023/5/17) followed Jordanians' comments on this horrific incident, with activist Mohammed Alawneh considering the reason for recklessness and writing, "What the truck driver was subjected to is a difficult affliction, while the recklessness practiced by the violators participating in the processions has no solution except the harshest deterrent penalties."
For his part, Mahmoud said that the reason is the lack of penalties and wrote, "There are no violations and no penalties, it is normal for recklessness to continue, violations are almost non-existent, people are not afraid of penalties because they do not violate, so their lawlessness and rebellion continue."
For his part, activist Abed held the two parties responsible and wrote, "The right of both parties to the accident, but parking and for any reason does not mean that the right is on them, the owner of the truck had to take care of what enters a tunnel at this speed, because his speed is high and the truck parking is difficult, so he had to reduce his speed."
Activist Nizar pointed out that "it is supposed to be in a light sign at the entrance to the tunnel in the event of congestion inside, we pray for a speedy recovery for the injured."
Activist Heba Al-Daous commented, "The driver is committed to a moderate speed and wears a seat belt, the beginning of the tunnel has a slope, it is difficult for a truck driver loaded with hundreds of tons to stop it slowly, they can only settle the wedding with a tunnel! There is no sign in the shadow!!".
It is noteworthy that the Jordanian traffic law stipulates a penalty of imprisonment from 3 months to 3 years or a fine of one thousand to two thousand dinars (about $ 2800,6), or both penalties for those who cause the death of a person or cause permanent disability to him, and the freezing of the driver's license for a period of not less than <> months and not more than two years.
According to official figures, during 2022, Jordan recorded 170,562 traffic accidents in which about <> people of different ages were killed.
