Restoration

Meticulous Use a microscope to adjust the warp and weft filaments of the Yongle Dian

Among the many exhibits in this exhibition, the key collection of the National Library, "Yongle Dian", is the most eye-catching, and it is the first exhibit in the restoration exhibition. The restored "Lake" character book (volumes 2272-2274) contains poems and texts about the character "lake", including Xie Lingyun's poems, Tang, Song, Yuan, and Mingren poems, and Song-Yuan people's words. Wang Guowei, Zhao Wanli and other famous artists have compiled several ancient poems from them.

Before the restoration, the front and back of the "Yongle Classic" before and after the book clothes had fallen off, the spine was completely missing, the National Library ancient book restorer Song Jing told the Beijing Youth Daily reporter: "Because the "Yongle Classic" is extremely precious, so the restoration team copied an identical 'sample book' for restoration experiments, and only then dared to attack the real work." ”

Today's restoration of ancient books requires a lot of scientific and technological support, for example, the restoration team of the National Library in the book jacket carried out fiber analysis and testing of the paper used in the book leaves, and selected the supplementary paper accordingly; In the restoration of the bookwear, it is no longer limited to the purchase of similar silk materials for repair, but the silk thickness and density of the silk used in the "Yongle Dian" book clothing are accurately measured, and after many experiments, a silk sample similar to the original is reconstructed, and then the new silk is customized accordingly. Song Jing told the Beiqing News reporter: "In order to make the new silk close to the original in color, the team members referred to historical documents, assisted the analysis and testing results of the book clothes, selected the traditional plant dyes most likely to be used at that time to dye and age, and then hammered, full color and other steps, and finally obtained a silk supplement suitable for repairing the original." ”

In order to make the restoration work close to perfect, the members of the ancient book restoration team used stereo microscopes and other instruments and equipment to comb and adjust each silk at the interface, Song Jing said: "The interface of a silk must be aligned, it is difficult to complete the work under the naked eye, and it can only be operated with the help of a microscope." "Under the microscope, while adjusting the warp and weft filaments by hand, the changes and operation of the warp and weft filaments are observed through the display screen. After more than a year of restoration work, this "Lake" character book of the "Yongle Classic" can be exhibited.

Zhang Ping, a senior expert in the restoration of ancient books and a research librarian of the National Library, participated in the restoration of the Yongle Canon 20 years ago. He said: "With the help of modern technology, the 'Lake' brochure tested paper, silk, etc., so as to determine the correct restoration plan, and the restoration effect exceeded expectations. ”

It is reported that this exhibition is located in the 6th exhibition hall of the National Museum of Classics, with a duration of 2 months, and is open to the public free of charge.
