Four children who went missing after a plane crash over the rainforest in Colombia in early May have been found alive. "After an arduous search by our armed forces, we found the four children alive on Wednesday," said Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Twitter.

The children are eleven months old, four, nine and 13 years old. Her mother and two other adults were killed in the plane crash.

The Cessna 206 had already disappeared from the radar on May 1 while flying over the Amazon rainforest. At the time, it was located near San José del Guaviare, one of the largest cities in the Colombian Amazon.Since the rainforest in the area is very dense and difficult to access, the missing aircraft was first searched for from the air.

But it was not until Monday that the rescue workers reached the crash site on the ground, as the head of the local civil defense, German Camargo, told the AFP news agency. Recovery teams found bitten fruit from the jungle at the crash site, which is why they hoped for survivors.
