The Penguin Random House group has announced on Monday the purchase of Roca Editorial. The move represents a new expansion of the multinational group, which in 2019 acquired Salamandra and in 2021 also bought the Molino, Serres and La Magrana labels from RBA.

Penguin Random House, owned by the German conglomerate Bertelsmann, maintains a struggle for leadership in the sale of books in Spain with the Spanish Planeta. Both groups move around 25% of total sales in our country, although it has been Planeta that has always maintained the first position until now.

Roca Editorial turns 20 in 2023. It was founded in Barcelona in September 2003 by six partners with extensive experience in the world of books. It launched its first titles in March 2004 and managed, with the leadership of Blanca Rosa Roca, to be one of the ten most important independent publishers in the Spanish language.

As happened four years ago with the purchase of Salamandra, there is an age reason behind this movement. Blanca Rosa Roca is 66 years old and thus begins her retirement, although for the moment she will continue working at Roca, within the Penguin Random House group.

Roca's catalogue includes more than 1,100 titles, including works of fiction and non-fiction, children's and young people's literature and comics. Every year it is publishing about 150 titles by national and international authors such as Elia Barceló, Dulcinea, Fernando Rueda, Naomi Alderman, Cristopher Paolini, Nicholas Sparks and John Verdon, among others.

The relationship of both companies is not new. Penguin Randome House and Roca had been collaborating with distribution and paperback publishing agreements for more than 15 years.
