The traditional "Naki Sumo" in which babies compete on the ring is held at a shrine in Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture.

"Naki Sumo" is an event that has been handed down since the Edo period at Mikumano Shrine in Hanamaki City, and is held every spring and autumn in hopes of the healthy growth of children.

Due to the influence of the new coronavirus, the spring event was held for the first time in four years, and 4 babies from all over Japan from 6 months old to 1 year and 8 months of age participated and competed in the East and West divisions.

Some babies cried when they received it, and some babies stayed asleep even after the sumo wrestling started, and there were loud cheers from the audience.

The mother of a 1-year-old and 4-month-old boy from Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture, said, "I cried, but I think I did my best, and I hope that the child will grow up to be a child who challenges various things."

In addition, the mother of a 10-month-old boy from Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture, said, "I couldn't go out easily due to the corona disaster, but I'm glad that the tournament has resumed.

Crying sumo wrestling takes place for as long as 5 days.
