While helmets will be required for all cyclists from this month, Tokyo Governor Koike stated that "the rate of wearing helmets by Tokyo residents is low" and indicated that he would support projects by local governments in Tokyo to subsidize the purchase of helmets.

With the enforcement of the revised Road Traffic Law, from this month, it became mandatory for all people who ride bicycles regardless of age to wear helmets.

On the other hand, according to the National Police Agency, when we examined the wearing rate in each region from February to March, it was 2.3% in Tokyo.

In response to this situation, Governor Koike stated at a press conference, "Unfortunately, the rate of wearing bicycles by Tokyo residents is low, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been supporting wards and municipalities by establishing a subsidy system to promote the safe use of bicycles, but from this fiscal year, helmets will be added to the subsidy program."

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has decided to support half the cost of subsidizing the purchase cost of helmets by wards and municipalities, up to a maximum of 1,1000 yen per helmet.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, as of the beginning of this month, five wards and four cities in Tokyo are implementing subsidized projects, and local governments that have started subsidized projects in the future will also be eligible.
