This Thursday, the president of the Cannes Film Festival, Iris Knobloch, and the director general, Thierry Frémaux, announced at a press conference the list of films selected in official competition for the 76th edition, which will be chaired by director Ruben Östlund. For the first time, six female directors are competing, a record.

This Thursday, the list of films selected in official competition for the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival was revealed by Iris Knobloch and Thierry Frémaux, respectively president and CEO of the film event.

A greater place for women directors

Six female directors will be in the running for the Palme d'Or at the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, to be held from May 16 to 27 on the Croisette, a record in the history of the Festival, according to the list unveiled Thursday by the general delegate of the Festival Thierry Frémaux.

Among these women, two French, the directors Catherine Breillat and Justine Triet. Also noteworthy is the presence of a young Senegalese filmmaker Ramata-Toulaye Sy and the Tunisian Kaouther Ben Hania. The film that will open the festival, "Jeanne du Barry" (out of competition), is also directed by a director: the French Maïwenn.

Wim Wenders, Ken Loach, Wes Anderson, Catherine Breillat in competition

The new films of Wim Wenders, Ken Loach, Wes Anderson, Catherine Breillat and Kore-Eda will be in competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival from May 16 to 27, announced Thursday the general delegate Thierry Frémaux.

A total of 19 films were selected, which could be joined by a twentieth, Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon". This film is currently planned out of competition but the festival would like to see it compete for the Palme d'Or: "the request has been made" to producers Paramount and Apple TV, "the main thing is that we have an answer before the festival begins," said Thierry Frémaux.
