Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno has announced that he will appeal to the Supreme Court the Sapporo High Court's ruling ordering the government to compensate the government in a lawsuit in which a man sued the government for being forced to undergo sterilization under the former Eugenic Protection Law.

In a lawsuit in which a man in Sapporo City was forced to undergo sterilization under the former Eugenic Protection Law about 60 years ago, and is seeking compensation from the government, the Sapporo High Court in the second instance ordered the government to pay 2.16 million yen on the 1650th of this month.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno stated at a press conference in the morning, "We have come to the judgment that we have no choice but to appeal the issue regarding the interpretation and application of the law during the exclusion period, during which the right to seek compensation after 20 years has passed due to an illegal act, in order to seek a ruling from the Supreme Court."

On the other hand, he said, "There is no change in the feeling that the Government sincerely regrets and deeply apologizes for the fact that many people have been forced to undergo surgeries that make them unable to reproduce due to specific diseases or disabilities, and have suffered enormous physical and mental suffering."

He emphasized that "the Government will continue to exert its utmost efforts toward the realization of a society in which all citizens live together while respecting each other's personalities and individuality, without being separated by the presence or absence of illness or disability."
