【Commentary】Recently, at the Yucai Special Education School in Liubei District, Liuzhou City, Guangxi, there was a sound of reading aloud in the classroom. The 81-year-old Hu Huiyue is touring the hall and will interact with the children from time to time, and the classroom atmosphere is harmonious and active. Unlike ordinary children, children in this school are mostly autistic.

【Commentary】Hu Huiyue is the principal of Yucai Special Education School in Liubei District, Liuzhou City, Guangxi, and her teaching work has run through her career. After retiring, she devoted herself to special education for 25 years. Nearly <> students are currently receiving special education at the school.

When I retired, I felt I should do something meaningful. In the 20s of the 90th century, we had only one private special education (school) in Liuzhou, and these (autistic) children did not go to school, and I think knowledge can change their destiny, so we want them to learn cultural knowledge, learn to take care of themselves, and learn to be able to integrate into society.

【Explanation】Understand the use of items and tools, express your emotions and needs, master basic life skills... Everything is based on their ability to communicate with the outside world. In schools, language teaching takes place anytime, anywhere. Hu Huiyue said that learning to establish communication with the outside world is the fundamental significance of the existence of language courses. For some children, "grandma" is the first word they say in their lives.

[Autistic children] are fast for a year, and slow ones for three or four years to speak. [So] I think the main thing in teaching content is communication. The first sentence taught them, "Call Grandma first," and it might be easier to speak.

【Commentary】The "bridge" between children and the outside world is being built at an extremely slow speed. At the same time, the teachers at the school found that many children were passionate about manual work and sports such as handicrafts, farming and digging, and wanted to improve their ability to adapt to social life by cultivating their hobbies.

Why do our children want to participate in sports competitions, because they are more interested in this area, especially playing table tennis, which they are easy to learn. So (we) train students according to their different hobbies, what they love to do, we specialize in training.

In order to better develop special education, Hu Huiyue has participated in countless exchange learning and training activities related to special education in the past 25 years. Among the many activities, she is almost the oldest one. The experience of visiting a special education school in Hong Kong was very unforgettable.

[I] was touched that there are (special) schools in vocational education that are the best, with laundries, car washes, restaurants, hostels, and children learning a lot. The children said to us, "I'm disabled, but I'm not a waste," and that touched me the most, so I wanted our children to be like them, able to support themselves and contribute to society.

【Commentary】The trip to Hong Kong made her more determined to help children with autism to support themselves. Back in Liuzhou City, she contacted chalk factories, garment factories and other enterprises, and made several attempts to solve the employment problem of these children, but for various reasons, these attempts ended in failure, but she never wanted to give up.

Now the idea is, we have found a company that is willing to provide us with sticks and technology, teach us how to grow it, and I think this one may be able to do it. I also want to make a washing workshop, help some small restaurants, and there are business units, their curtain tablecloths, just take them back and wash.

【Commentary】Today, the flower garden in the school has been reclaimed for vegetable cultivation. Hu Huiyue plans to free up the school's utility room so that the children can learn to grow fungus to earn a certain income. She hopes that in the future, these children will be able to contribute to society by supporting themselves.
