Tan Dun launched a new work "Five Aggregates Heaven and Earth", which is a "Symphony of the Yuan Universe"

On March 3, the new metaverse symphony "Five Souls" (Five Souls) by the well-known composer and conductor Tan Dun was officially released worldwide.

He said that the cooperation with Decca Classics will start with this brand new work.

In February this year, Decca Records, a classical music label under Universal Music Group, officially signed a contract with musician Tan Dun.

Tom Lewis and Laura Monks, co-presidents of Decca Music Group, said: "We are very proud to announce that Tan Dun has joined Decca Records. He is a world-renowned classical musician and can be said to be the most creative and energetic in the world today. One of the most passionate and passionate composers. His creations reflect the unique ways that music can change people's lives."

Tan Dun said that he has always had two goals in mind: "I not only want to establish a music concept, but also want to develop a cross-cultural concept, combining nature with classical music, and integrating ancient music with modern music." He Describing The Five Aggregates as a journey from the real universe to the metaverse, "where our spirit, who we are and what we are meant to be will be discovered."

The five singles of this brand new metaverse symphony correspond to five movements respectively (H₂O Tempo/water speed color, Horch/listening, WE(West & East)/thinking west and east, Meta Voyage/Yuanyuxing, Dream Rhythm/dream consciousness).

Small ensemble in five movements, including water percussion, harp, brass, strings and didgeridoo.

"Metaverse Symphony is an idea and philosophy of artistic creation"

Tan Dun told The Paper that Metaverse is a very popular topic in culture and business in recent years, and it has naturally penetrated into his life and creative thinking.

"For me, the metaverse symphony has evolved more into an idea and philosophy of artistic creation. At the same time, it also provides a technological atmosphere for music creation. For Chinese people, the concept of metaverse is actually two thousand years old. Many years ago, Lao Zhuang’s thoughts flashed. And in the ancient Indian language, there is also the five aggregates of heaven and earth (the five aggregates in Buddhism are form aggregate, feeling aggregate, thinking aggregate, action aggregate, and consciousness aggregate, which means accumulation Or harmony.) In fact, Taoism and Zen have a great influence on my creation.”

"In Beethoven's creative era, when he wrote "Pastoral", he had neither videos nor photos. Their thinking about nature and the universe came more from imagination and abstract descriptions, but the cosmology in the works traveled through time and space. Now In the world, everyone is sharing the concept of the metaverse so frantically, but it does not exceed the world imagined by Lao Zhuang and the Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng. Influenced by the view of the universe, I later made this idea into the source of the five titles in the new album. In the process of recording the performance of "Wuyun Tiandi", there is not only an abstract worldview, but also the visual presentation of the music. It embodies the level of the metaverse, and the cosmic elements such as air, water, and metal have become part of our performance."

The creation of "Wuyun Tiandi" is also closely related to the current technological development.

"It not only embodies the traditional Chinese view of the universe, but also plays an important role in the production and editing of panoramic sound. We used the 'Yuan Orchestra' to perform this time. In the audio sound field of panoramic sound, it not only flows clockwise, but also The time is also counterclockwise, even the penetration and connection of east, west, north and south (direction)." Tan Dun said, "The third movement is called 'WE', we. In my opinion, this is also a combination of WEST and EAST. This also reflects the idea of the metaverse." Tan Dun said.

The new album was recorded in an abandoned industrial plant in Brooklyn, New York.

Tan Dun recalled with great interest, "We rented a huge industrial workshop and painted it in half, one half was white and the other half was black. It’s representing day and night, and I told them it’s actually the Chinese concept of yin and yang. Standing between black and white, it’s like feeling the atmosphere of the metaverse.”

"Combined with the energy of the earth, the state of life will be completely different"

As early as the 1960s, when Tan Dun was a young boy, he ran barefoot in the fields in the countryside of Hunan. The sounds of nature around him and traditional Chinese culture became the inspiration for his initial music creation.

At first, when he was washing clothes by the river with his grandma, he accidentally discovered that the sound of the river was extremely soothing.

Today, although he lives in New York and is one of the world's leading composers, receiving countless accolades, he still often uses the sound of water as an instrument in his compositions.

He continues to explore the connection between nature and music, and stone and paper have also become his instruments.

"Nature has always been the source of my imagination about sound and the material level of sound. I also used a lot of natural sounds in "Five Aggregates and Heaven and Earth"." Tan Dun said, "I grew up in the countryside of Hunan. The big one has been running on the ground with bare feet for ten years. I have never worn shoes since I was a child, and I like bare feet. Because my grandma once told me that the air of the earth is a very powerful force. Look at kittens and puppies After a fall, they lie on the ground for a few hours, and then come back to life. In the Chu culture and Wu Nuo culture in Hunan, if life on earth, including human beings, can be combined with the energy of the earth, they will be alive. life would be completely different.”

"Nature has given us so many things, and our ancestors have been 'decoding'. As musicians, we are using sound to decode these mysterious things around us. You can hear the sound of clay in "Five Aggregates Heaven and Earth" , the sound of air, the sound of metal, the sound of water, and the sound of gas flowing in the universe, these have run through my creation as a musician all my life, and these all come from my experience growing up barefoot in Hunan when I was a child." Tan Dun said.

The arrangement of the five movements in "Five Aggregates Heaven and Earth" comes from the comparison of the music, sound and texture of the respective movements.

"For example, in the first movement, I was thinking in English at the beginning, and I used the molecular formula of H₂O water, which is easier for young people to accept; in the second movement, I used a lot of metal elements; in the third movement, I used There are many timbres of Eastern and Western pipas, such as the native pipa of Yunnan, the five-stringed pipa of Dunhuang, and the pipa of Jiangnan Sizhu; in the fourth movement, I used the sound of Humai and the Australian native flute; in the last movement, I want to present a dream So I imagined it from the emptyness of the five aggregates in the "Heart Sutra", or the contrast between the scientific element table and the sound? I first thought about it from the perspective of science and technology, but what I didn't expect was that, Finally, when summarizing from the Chinese perspective, I found that the connection between them is seamless."

It is also reported that on September 23 this year, Tan Dun's other album "The Tears of Nature" (The Tears of Nature) will also be released.

This 25-minute percussion concerto was written after he witnessed three natural disasters: the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, the Japanese tsunami in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in New York in 2012.

"This is also the product of my thinking in the dimension of metaverse. Zhuangzi said: Heaven and earth are born side by side with me, and all things are one with me. In Lao Zhuang's philosophical system, everything in the world has life. Just like raining Sometimes, it seems that nature is crying. And these disasters across the East and West, I understand them as the tears of compassion of nature, and I want to use music to convey this kind of thinking and emotion.”
