The prestigious Spanish evolutionary biologist resigned, forced, from the
University of California at Irvine
in 2018, after an investigation by his center gave credence to
allegations of sexual harassment
filed against him by four women with whom he worked.
The Madrid researcher, who has spent practically his entire career in the US,
defended his innocence
arguing that he had been fired for his "gentlemanly manners" and that they had turned his "kindness into accusations of sexual harassment", as he told this newspaper. in an interview in July 2018.
The Spanish scientist
became the second member of the US Academy of Sciences to be expelled for sexual harassment
since the organization revised its statutes to allow its members to leave the institution if they violate its code of conduct.
Author of more than 40 books, Ayala, who is a United States national, has been named an
honorary
doctor
by twenty universities
and, among other positions, was a scientific adviser to President Bill Clinton.
