"When I first became a doctor, there were still many medical technologies in mainland China that followed or imitated international trends. Now, with the continuous development of the motherland's economy and medical technology, we have the confidence and opportunity to make a professional voice internationally." Nationwide Xu Wei, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, said in an exclusive interview with China News Agency recently.

As a member of the Standing Committee of the Taiwan League Central Committee and vice chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Taiwan League, 48-year-old Xu Wei is a third-generation Taiwan compatriot who has settled in the mainland. His grandfather traveled between Taipei, Taiwan and Xiamen, Fujian to practice medicine in the early 20th century.

Deeply influenced by Xinglin, he was admitted to the Department of Clinical Medicine of Sun Yat-Sen Medical University (now merged into Sun Yat-Sen University) in 1992, and has practiced medicine since graduation.

Xu Wei has been engaged in medical teaching and research in the Department of Urology for more than 20 years. He is a well-known expert in the field of minimally invasive surgery for urinary calculi and tumors, and has rich experience in emergency and severe treatment.

At the beginning of 2020, he rushed to help Wuhan fight the new crown epidemic, promote multidisciplinary cooperation and build a front-rear remote consultation platform.

"For a surgeon, every operation and every patient healed is a great achievement." Xu Wei said, "I have been in medicine for so long, and I have been in contact with different patients every day. The trust of patients has given me Infinite drive to continue exploring new medical questions, a path I feel well suited to pursue."

There are frequent exchanges in the medical field between the two sides of the strait. During the prevention and control of the new crown epidemic, the development of disciplines is often discussed online.

In Xu Wei's view, the mainland's medical care has gone from "following" to "running side by side", and now some are "leading".

"Twenty years ago, taking urology as an example, the mainland was far behind in many fields and directions. For the minimally invasive technology that was just emerging at that time, the mainland's instruments and equipment were relatively backward." Xu Wei believes that after nearly 20 years With the development in the past year, many breakthroughs have been made in many fields of urology in mainland China, such as the first laparoscopic radical bladder cancer surgery and microchannel percutaneous nephroscopic surgery.

"Now we often hold special training courses on minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment, and colleagues from Taiwan will also come to observe them." He said.

Xu Wei will also treat Taiwanese patients in the hospital. There are Taiwanese compatriots who have lived and worked in Guangdong for a long time, and Taiwanese tourists who have urinary system emergencies during the trip. "In the past, these Taiwanese compatriots would go back to Taiwan for medical treatment, but now, they will Stay in a hospital on the mainland for treatment."

With the progress and development of universities in the mainland and their international influence rising, the willingness of Taiwanese students to study in the mainland is also increasing.

"Since more than ten years ago, our department has begun to recruit Taiwanese students. Every year, there are Taiwanese students who come here to study, and the number is increasing. They are mainly concentrated in surgery, dermatology and internal medicine. Now there are quite a few who stay in the hospital to work. Xu Wei said that communicating with Taiwanese students, he feels that they are full of vitality and enthusiasm, and they are full of expectations for the development of the mainland. "Many students are considering staying in Guangdong to develop after graduation."

Xu Wei hopes that more Taiwanese students will go to mainland universities and scientific research institutions to study and pursue advanced studies.

"On the mainland, as long as you work hard, you can gain everyone's respect," he said.
