The social and economic development of our mainland and the development of our medical technology have given us equal dialogue, given us the ability to make our professional voices internationally, and (had) more confidence.

[Explanation] The 48-year-old Xu Wei is a third-generation Taiwan compatriot who has settled in the mainland of the motherland. His grandfather traveled between Taipei, Taiwan and Xiamen, Fujian to practice medicine at the beginning of the last century.

Deeply influenced by Xinglin, he was admitted to the Department of Clinical Medicine of Sun Yat-Sen Medical University (now merged into Sun Yat-Sen University) in 1992, and has practiced medicine since graduation.

Xu Wei has worked in the Department of Urology for more than 20 years, and has profound attainments in the field of minimally invasive surgery for urinary calculi and tumors. He has published more than 50 papers in core journals at home and abroad in this professional field.

At the beginning of 2020, he led 151 medical staff to help Wuhan fight the new crown epidemic, promote multidisciplinary cooperation and build a front-rear remote consultation platform.

For surgeons, being able to help patients recover smoothly, completing an operation and curing a patient is actually full of a sense of accomplishment, because we can contact different patients every day, and we can continue to learn from each patient every day. We can observe and learn a lot of medical knowledge, and we will continue to give ourselves some new kinetic energy and new knowledge, so we feel that there is still an endless career for exploration.

[Explanation] In the field of medicine, the mainland and Taiwan have always had frequent exchanges. During the epidemic prevention and control period, they will often communicate online to discuss the development of disciplines.

In Xu Wei's view, mainland medical care has gone from "following" to "running side by side", and now some are "leading". Taiwan's medical community is also gradually changing its views on the development of mainland medical care.

It can be said that about 20 years ago, when we (mainland) just started to have more exchanges with Taiwan in the (medical) professional field, we were still far behind in many fields and directions.

For some minimally invasive technologies that were just emerging at that time, because our instruments and equipment were relatively backward, (now) after more than ten years of development in this field, we actually have quite a few in many fields. Direction, for example, our radical surgery for bladder cancer, we have a great influence in (Mainland) and internationally. It can be said that our counterparts in Taiwan in this field also look at us with admiration.

[Explanation] Xu Wei told reporters that sometimes he also treats Taiwanese patients in the hospital, some are Taiwan compatriots living and working in Guangzhou, and some are Taiwanese tourists who have urinary tract stones and other urinary diseases during the trip.

In the past, when there were some emergencies and some illnesses, they would sometimes go back to Taiwan to see a doctor. Now they come to our big hospitals for treatment, so there are still many contacts. Our feelings are all connected, and he has great trust in our doctors, so this makes us redouble our efforts to serve them well.

[Explanation] With the progress and development of mainland universities and their international influence, the willingness of Taiwanese students to study in the mainland is also increasing.

Xu Wei said that he usually communicates with Taiwanese students and feels that they are full of vitality and enthusiasm, and at the same time they are full of expectations for the future development of the mainland.

It should be said that more than ten years ago, our department recruited students from Taiwan, and now there are more. Now there are several students in our hospital, and there are several students from Taiwan here every year. I also feel that they are right for this. The development of the mainland of the motherland is also full of such unlimited expectations, so many of their classmates are considering staying in Guangdong to develop.
