The American jazz saxophonist and composer

Wayne Shorter,

famous for having worked with Miles Davis in the Second Great Quintet, died this Thursday at the age of 89 in a hospital in Los Angeles (California, USA).

The news has been confirmed by his publicist to the newspaper 'The New York Times', but the reasons for his death have not been specified.

Shorter is considered

one of the most prolific jazz players in

American musical history, having maintained a career spanning nearly 70 years on the stage.

Born in

Newark

, New Jersey (USA), in 1933, Wayne studied at the Newark High School of the Arts, began his musical studies at the encouragement of his father and before becoming a professional on the soprano saxophone, he also tried his hand at the clarinet.

His musical vision was influenced by the work of

jazz musicians

such as Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, and Coleman Hawkins.

In 1959 Shorter joined The Jazz Messengers, led by drummer Art Blakey.

In it he achieved international recognition after the numerous tours around the world that he undertook and the musical pieces that he composed.

His next job would be with the famous American trumpeter

Miles Davis

, as part of the Second Great Quintet.

In the Davis quintet, Shorter was able to explore

his own style and compositions

more freely , and it is there that he is considered to have found his own voice and musical identity.

Along with his work with Davis, Shorter recorded albums with

renowned trumpeters such as Freddie Hubbard

, Lee Morgan, or the pianist McCoy Tyner.

In the 70s Shorter created the jazz fusion band Weather Report and in that same decade he also worked with the Canadian folk singer Joni Mitchell, with whom he would collaborate throughout his career in the creation of ten of his albums.

He also worked with guitarist Carlos Santana on albums such as "The Swing of Delight" and "This Is This", and in the 1990s he presented "High Life", an album that received a Grammy Award for best contemporary jazz album.

In total, the musician won 12 Grammy Awards and was nominated 23 times.

In 2018 Shorter retired from the stage due to health problems, but he continued his work as a composer.
