• Music This is how musicians make a living with TikTok: "We all take advantage"

Meler

is one of many examples of a music career born from social media.

The band formed by

Jonathan Burt

(Marbella, 1994),

Javier Pagalday

(Luxembourg, 1997) and

Lorenzo Fernández

(Madrid, 1995) began making music on the streets of London and on the Madrid subway.

But it wasn't until they rose to fame on Instagram and TikTok that their project really took off.

Now,

they are part of Sony Music and have participated in the last Benidorm Fest

.

They are also closing their first concerts.

We chat on Zoom while they are on the AVE on their way to their latest promotion.

With the headphones on and the computer on their legs, the answers follow one another.

Each one is from a different city, how did the idea of forming a group together come about? We met at a music academy and we got along a lot as friends, but we also had very cool musical chemistry.

We started writing songs in English so we tried going to London and busking to see how people would respond.

That trip was a before and after because we saw that we had something very special that people liked.

We came to Spain and we considered what would be the most direct way for the public to find out about our songs and to get money to finance them.

That's why we bet on playing in the subway.

For two years we continued with English and with the pandemic we switched to Spanish. At what point did the subway jump to social networks? We saw two points in favor of the subway:

trying to get money to finance being able to record our songs and the great level of exposure that it entails.

So we were going to play with posters where we put our names on our networks so that people could 'follow' us and stay connected to us for life. And what networks were they? At that time, which would be 2018 or 2019, everything We did it through Instagram. And when and why did you open TikTok? Well, it was because we saw Instagram as something very measured, very professional, and this gave us the option of uploading more spontaneous things.

We would make any joke and share it.

That's when we realized that it had a very large capacity of people that you could reach.

We were testing and testing and seeing what trends could work and what could be better for us. What was the first video that went viral for you?

And how is he.

We did a cover of the Perales song with the idea of 'how would it sound if Meler did it' and it went very, very well.

The good pressure we received on TikTok was such that we decided to release the song on Spotify and now it is among the three most listened to.

There is also another case.

The one on Calle y Poché, which was Jonathan's idea.

It is, by far, the song that we have been asked for the most.

You would go into the comments of any TikTok video and there would be hundreds asking us to upload that song.

So it's another one that we've uploaded to our Spotify at the request of TikTok.

The reality is that what happens on the platform can have a lot of influence on an artist's career.

In fact, it can't, it happens. The problem is that it can't be monetized that easily. Well,

perhaps that free culture is here to stay and what you have to do is link these free platforms with others that do contribute to you, such as Spotify. Have you seen any other type of impact outside of the social network?

Collaborations? No collaborations at the moment, but events.

It is noticeable that they invite you to places and it is a clear repercussion.

In the end, TikTok makes you known and that people know who you are is always positive. Has it been the most important platform in your career? We have never released a song at the request of Instagram, but two at the request of TikTok.

That tells you everything.

In the end, what an artist wants is to create a community and it is a platform that helps that process to be faster. I see that it also influences your creative process. Yes.

And we don't see that only in us,

also in many artists who have 'the TikTok part' of a song.

It is a characteristic part with peculiar phrases and where it is appropriate to do a dance.

Maybe a song goes viral because of that 15-second excerpt and then there are many people who don't even know the chorus. Since you opened your account, have you noticed that anything has changed?

A lot.

Apparently the median age of use is changing as well.

We see it in our mothers.

Before they didn't know what it was and now they handle it much more than we do. Lastly, how do you plan your future on TikTok? The beauty of it is that it makes you constantly renew yourself.

The video always starts from scratch and that forces you to reinvent yourself, so we will look for new creative ways to promote ourselves.
