Have you ever wondered if you have to

clean your combs and brushes

and

how or how often?

And, most importantly, do you do it?

The question is not trivial according to the

quick survey

made to my acquaintances before sinking my teeth into the subject.

Because, honestly, I worry so much about the state of my hair, perhaps what worries me the most at the 'beauty' level, beyond

removing the fallen hair

from my brush from time to time, I care little about the health of my my hairstyle tools

It is true that, because I have curly hair, I rarely use the brush, my

fingers are my daily weapon.

Yet my own sin seems to be

a widespread evil...

"I don't clean combs and brushes much,

when they're bad, I throw them away."

"Beyond removing the hairs, I don't do much more to the brush."

"Once

I put the comb in the dishwasher...".

"I do clean my daughter's comb, I remove her hair and sometimes

I put it in soap and water"

("As a usual practice?", I ask this statement. "No,

when I remember").

Given this collection of phrases, it is clear that, despite our

concern about hair,

its condition, its health, its shape, its cut and its hairstyle, we do not give it the importance that, on the other hand, the tools with which it deserves we comb

it

daily.

The comb, or brush, is much more than just a comb (or brush)

Faced with the insouciance that we show in front of combs and brushes, hairdressers defend their weapons tooth and nail.

Their brushes are like makeup artists

,

and we do clean those more often (or not?).

"Brushes for stylists are like

the brush for the painter

who wants to draw a landscape or

the scalpel of the surgeon

who is about to operate, tools with which he has to do the best job on a daily basis, with which he has to feel comfortable and above all handle it with ease and even elegance.A

brush is more than a brush,

because

a hairstyle is the last step

when it comes to finishing off a good color job, it is when it really shines, where you can see, for example, a good color job.

balayage

with the color well blended between the waves of the final hairstyle", explains

Pablo Bogado,

ambassador of the brand of

Termix

tools and hairdresser and colorist at

Pablo Bogado-Hair Studio.

Also, a good comb and brush can do a lot for our hair.

As the expert in the field and creator of her own brand,

Modesta Cassinello,

points out, brushing is much more than untangling, because "with the right tool, you can achieve

smoother and shinier finishes,

and even faster drying".

Not only, Balmain Hair

experts

recommend "daily brushing because it prevents the accumulation of fat at the roots and

the frequency of washing can be reduced".

But there is even more: daily brushing distributes

the natural oils of the hair,

which are usually concentrated at the roots, towards the mid-lengths and ends, working as an

anti-frizz elixir.

If you are still not convinced of the importance of using good brushes, it is worth remembering that many of them also massage the scalp and

activate blood circulation

so that the hair is healthy and shiny.

Why do you have to clean combs and brushes?

We already know what a good brushing, and its corresponding combs, can do for our hair.

Now it is the turn of the importance of

keeping these tools clean,

because "brushes, like any other work tool, need maintenance, simple, but necessary, both professionally and personally, so they always

perform in the best possible way",

Pablo insists .

bogado.

Omar El Gharbawy,

Balmain Hair Master Trainer

,

explains the reasons why you have to be aware of cleaning these hair weapons: "They not only

accumulate dirt, dandruff or the oils

of the scalp, but also

dust

and, of course, , all the

residues of the styling products

that we apply".

All of these elements create the perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

And beyond the fact that it is unhygienic and that it makes no sense to brush your hair with a dirty tool, what we will achieve by using a comb in poor condition is the opposite of the desired effect: instead of giving hair shine, we will be

contributing

to get

dirty faster.

What happens to hair if 'dirty' brushes are used...

Dirtier hair

earlier and

less shiny

is the immediate consequence of not cleaning your combs as you should.

But it is not the only negative thing that can happen to your hair.

"The brush is the tool that is most in direct contact with our

hair and scalp,

therefore, the 'healthier' our brush is, the healthier our hair will be," Pablo Bogado sums up simply.

Still not convinced?

Bogado insists: "We must

pamper our brush as we pamper our hair

if we want our hair to be really healthy, shiny and cared for."

How and when to clean combs and brushes

Theory developed, the time has come to know how often we have to tune up our detangling and styling tools.

"The ideal would be

to remove the accumulated hair

on the brush

daily

and

disinfect it

once every 15 days

,

putting it in

warm soapy water

and leaving it to act for an hour or so," says Omar El Gharbawy.

You are lazy?

"For those who have a hard time getting into maintenance, I always make

a minimum of

a monthly cleaning an obligation , if they do not comply, their brush will not be in the optimal conditions that our daily care requires," Pablo Bogado concedes.

It does not matter if we talk about combs, brushes, and regardless of the material they are, all tools need this special cleaning every two weeks, one month being very tolerant.

The Balmain Hair Expert prefers

soapy water

because certain chemicals can be abrasive;

Caroline Greyl,

president of the luxury hair brand

Leonor Greyl,

is more than mixing

water with alcohol

to disinfect.

Whatever the cleaning, Caroline Greyl highlights the importance of

a good drying,

especially in brushes with pads, which need you to

press them well

to remove the water that remains inside, while the 'normal' ones are left

to dry on a towel.

The top care of a good brush

If we have convinced you to clean your comb or brush with enjoyment every 15 days, we encourage you to also follow these tips from Pablo Bogado to take care of your brush.

  • Take care where it rests.

Pamper the space where you are going to store your brush.

If it is a toiletry bag that does not share space, for example with makeup or other products that can stain it.

  • Remove excess hair after each brushing.

    Note to self: don't worry.

The normal thing is that after brushing we can lose 80 to 100 hairs after a good brushing.

    This is within the norm!

You can do it with your own hand or with a silicone glove.

Don't procrastinate too much on this task.

  • Get a brush cleaner.

If you want this hair removal task to be fast and effective, use a brush cleaner like the one from Termix.

It's like a guitar pick to tune our brushes so they're ready to work their magic.

  • Use warm soapy water to clean.

In this way, it is possible to soften the remains of products that remain adhered and that can hinder brushing.

Rub especially between the bristles and fibers of your brush, create enough foam and let it act for a couple of minutes, then rinse with plenty of water and without fear.

  • Dry and remove any residue,

    better with a fiber towel;

    press, but always delicately.

  • Sterilize from time to time.

It is one of the most important steps.

Although there are many homemade sanitizing mixes, my favorite is mixing ammonia with a cup of warm or hot water.

There are also specific products, such as Alcorapid from Termix, which is sprayed and disinfected.
