It borders Hoh Xil in Qinghai and Qiangtang National Nature Reserve in Tibet. The main protection objects are plateau desert ecosystems dominated by plateau ungulate wild animals represented by Tibetan antelope, wild yak and Tibetan wild ass.

In addition, there are a large number of rare wild animals such as snow leopards, brown bears, and golden eagles distributed in the Altun Mountain National Nature Reserve, which is a veritable wildlife paradise.
