  • Bono camera concert becomes giant

In 2021, the 20th anniversary of the release of

U2's

Achtung Baby , many fans expected a reissue of the

Zoo TV

tour .

It seemed the logical way to commemorate the record and concerts that reinvented U2 and defined their sound and style throughout the 1990s, before they entered their current phase of repeating the same album under a different name every four years.

After all, the group had already set a precedent with their 2017 tour to

celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of their biggest commercial success

,

The Joshua Tree

.

That was so successful that they repeated it in 2019, when there was no anniversary to celebrate.

The

Zoo TV-2

, however, never arrived.

But that's not to say U2 is going to give up on nostalgia.

The group has just joined the trend of re-recording records.

In a month he will publish

Surrender

, a reinterpretation of 40 titles in a more acoustic key than the originals.

And for November, U2 prepares a

Celine Dion

.

That is to say, he is going to Las Vegas to do what is called in the US "a residency"

, and which consists of a long season of concerts in the same venue.

The night U2 stood up to the IRA

Little is known about the concerts.

But on Sunday, at the Superbowl, an advertisement for that "residence", later posted on the group's website, divulged the title of the

shows

:

U2: UV Achtung Baby

.

In other words, the expected commemorative tour will be static.

The project has all the characteristics to: 1) be incredibly spectacular;

2) be incredibly profitable for U2;

3) confirm that the Irish have entered the

Rolling Stones phase

of their career, consisting of repeating their hits over and over again and combining them with the occasional release of remixes, compilations, live records and, if anything, some new material.

Nevada, where Las Vegas is located, is famous for its paleontological sites that

abound with fossils of everything from dinosaurs to mastodons

.

The presence of U2 in a superficial stratum of the earth's crust of the state is thus geologically predictable.

With their concerts, U2 will inaugurate the spectacular MSG Venetian concert center, financed in equal parts by the company Madison Square Garden Entertainment, owner of eight other auditoriums in the US - including the New York stadium from which it takes its name - and Las Vegas Sands , an old acquaintance of the people of Madrid, since it is the company founded by

Sheldon Adelson

, the gambling businessman who wanted to set up Eurovegas in the worst moments of the euro crisis.

Adelson will not see this project, which has cost 2,100 million dollars (almost 2,000 million euros), since he died two years ago.

The new center has a capacity for 17,500 people seated or 20,000 standing, is shaped like a giant sphere and has a circular screen of 15,000 square meters

(more or less like three football fields) that surrounds the audience.

The management of the MSG Venetian -which is next to the Venetian, one of the luxury hotel-casinos in Las Vegas Sands, built by Adelson after his honeymoon in Italy with his second wife, Miriam- will be carried out by Madison Square Garden Entertainment.

And that is where some have launched the alarms.

U2 will receive 10 million dollars (more than nine million euros) for the concerts and, according to the

New York Post

tabloid , will take 90% of the ticket price

.

Calculating a moderate figure for what is paid in the US for these events, but taking into account the morbidity of the occasion, it is not risky to assume, for example, an average price of $300.

That means more than five million dollars per concert, of which U2 would take 4.5 million.

Although the production is on behalf of the Irish,

the profitability of the operation seems guaranteed

.

And, according to some, ruin for Madison Square Garden Entertainment, which would be

paying for the most expensive ad in history

.

For now, U2 have not said how many nights they will play, or when, although it is supposed to start in September, when the MSG Venetian opens.

It is known, to the chagrin of some fans, that U2 will not be complete.

The drummer of the group, Larry Mullen, will not be able to play in all of 2023

due to his back problems, so he will be replaced by other musicians.
