CAN U20: twelve nations attacking the title and places for the World Cup

The 23rd African Cup of Nations Under 20 takes place from February 18 to March 12, 2023 in Egypt.

Teams that reach the semi-finals will automatically qualify for the U20 World Cup scheduled in Indonesia from May 20 to June 11, 2023.

After the CHAN in Algeria, place at the CAN U20 in Egypt where 12 countries of the continent will try to shine and afford a qualification for the next Under-20 World Cup.

The CAN U20 years has been organized since 1979 by the Confederation of African Football, and is held every two years.

The first edition was won by Algeria.  

First appearance for South Sudan

Of the twelve nations competing, the formation of South Sudan will participate for the first time in its history in a final phase.

The Bright Stars, who dream of passing the first round, will be opposed in group B to Congo Brazzaville, Uganda and the Central African Republic.

Their entry into the running is scheduled for Monday, February 20, 2023.

Another team to cross your fingers: Benin.

The Junior Squirrels are back after ten years of absence.

It will be the third time in history that they will play the competition after 2005, at home, and 2013 in Algeria.

We will obviously have to take a look at Senegal, whose team A 'offered the final of the last CHAN against Algeria.

The Lions are housed in pool A, along with the team of Egypt, host country, Nigeria and Mozambique.

Senegal, three times vice-champion of Africa (2015, 2017 and 2019), is looking for a first continental title at the CAN U20.

Recruiters on the lookout

The opening match is scheduled for Sunday February 19 between Egypt and Mozambique at the Cairo International Stadium.

According to CAF, recruiters from the main African and international clubs will come in large numbers to scrutinize the young nuggets.

 We know that African football is on the rise.

The talent is here in Africa, and the U20 Africa Cup of Nations is a perfect platform to showcase that talent.

We are doing our best to meet the demands of recruiters 

,” said CAF Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba.

African stars, who then shone on the world stage, had the opportunity to participate in the CAN U20 such as Seydou Keita (Mali), Mohamad Salah (Egypt), Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast), Patson Daka (Zambia ) or Mido (Egypt). 

During this new edition, the public will have the opportunity to see the Gambian Mamin Sanyang evolve, from the reserve of Bayern Munich this season.

The Tunisian Chaïm El Djebali, who plays as a midfielder with the reserve of Olympique Lyonnais, will also be one of the players to follow.

The native of Décines decided to represent the colors of Tunisia, after having known some selections among the young people of the France team.

He has a selection with team A, against the Comoros.

The 12 teams participating in this 23rd edition: Egypt, Senegal, Nigeria, Mozambique, Uganda, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Congo, Gambia, Tunisia, Benin and Zambia .
