"Hogwarts legacy" is an action role-playing game where you get the chance to move into the wizarding school in earnest.

The game has received great reviews and has already attracted a large audience when it was streamed on the gaming site Twitch.

At the same time, there is a heated discussion about the appropriateness of dealing with new Harry Potter products at all.

The fact that the author was not involved in the development of the game seems to matter less.

- The criticism is largely about JK Rowling's transphobic statements in recent years.

People don't want to support her and give her even more money and influence, says gaming journalist Anton Vretander.

"A sadness for many"

In recent years, Rowling has received a lot of criticism for the way she expresses herself about transgender people: degrading, sarcastic and dangerous, the author's critics say.

- She has become the face of a kind of trans-exclusive radical feminism, says Gabrielle de Bour, method developer at the game culture association Sverok.

Harry Potter has previously had an elevated position within the LGBTQ movement but has lost status after Rowling's involvement in trans issues.

A sadness for many, says Gabrielle de Bour.

- For late 80s and 90s Harry Potter has been extremely important.

You have discovered your identity through the books: they are about acceptance of the different and about finding a new family.

Themes that very many LGBTQ people recognize themselves in.

Now fans are competing in creative ways to bring down the author.

On Tiktok, JK Rowling's name is covered on book covers, others try to sabotage the game by spreading how it ends.

- They urge each other not to buy new books, merchandise or watch the new films, says Gabrielle de Bour.

"Should be a game for everyone"

Game makers Avalanche Software have announced that one of the characters in "Hogwarts Legacy" is actually transgender.

Whether it is an attempt to prevent criticism or should be seen as a stance against JK Rowling is unclear.

Avalanche Software does not want to appear for an interview with Kulturnyheterna.

- They have said that it should be a game for everyone.

But many think it's a bit of a crappy attempt to silence the opposition.

An insincere attempt to appear accepting, says Anton Vretander.
